Impulse, Ellen Hopkins

Impulse is about three teens named Conner, Tony, and Vanessa. They share one similarity and that is they all have tried to kill themselves and failed.
Conner is a rich kid, but his parents have a heart of stone. They expect him to be like his twin sister, perfect. Feeling no love at home and the end of his secret affair with an older woman, he feels that he has to end it with a bullet to the chest.
Tony has had a hard knock life. His mother is a crazy drunk and his father was absent most of his life. Tony want to jail at nine and exchanges sex for money. The sexually abuse he endured caused him to be confused about his sexuality. Feeling like a waste of space and that no one cares about him, Tony decides to leave the world that caused him so much pain with a bottle of pills.
Vanessa grew up with a bipolar mother and her father in the military. She cuts herself to get rid of the pain she feels from leaving her mom on the kitchen floor overdosing and from having an abortion. One night Vanessa cuts too deep and would've died if her younger brother hadn't found her and her grandmother wasn't an ex-nurse.
All three of them end up at Aspen Springs and find friendship in each other. Together, they all begin to grow and heal. Tony finds his father, Vanessa starts to forgive herself, and Connor tries but can't find his self-worth and love from his parents. All learn worth of life.
I was touched by all of their stories and could relate to what they were saying. I was hurt when Conner felt he couldn't live without the love of his family and his nanny had molested him. I think the author's intent was to speak to the teens and tell them that they aren't alone. She wanted to show that you all have something to live for and the suicide is never an option. The organization that I observed is order of importance.
